Oakleaf Cottage is the start of our dream — the start of what Dave and I want to do for the rest of our lives. We’ve spent 16 years remodeling houses and dreaming and building up to this. We said we would know the right place when we found it — and when we first saw this place, we knew we had.
We are quiet, kind of organic people. We love nature, and hiking, and gardening — neither of us can resist putting a seed in the ground, whether we find it on a walk or in a tropical fruit from the store. Our career paths have both meandered: Dave was a special-ed teacher for several years before starting his remodeling and furniture business; Cris has been a marketer and interior designer. But always, we had the dream: to have land, to have guests, and offer a place where people could relax or learn a new skill.
We spent the first six months remodeling the Cottage as well as working on the plans for the rest of the property. We added in a few more nostalgic details to the Cottage, painted, tiled, added a bathroom, changed lighting fixtures, rearranged the pantry wall of the kitchen and reworked the water system. It has been an exciting process!
Our plans have always included a gathering spot — a place to learn new skills or meet like-minded folk. We would love to have writer’s camps and artists gather here. Upon seeing the barn and the property layout, we realized this is also an idyllic place to tie the knot — and so our plans for the barn have been slightly amended with this in mind as well.
